My name is Tyler Hagan and I'm the chief coffee drinker & content curator over at thebloom.coffee blog. I've been passionate about specialty coffee for a number of years and recently stumbled into the world of blogging at the suggestion of a few friends in the coffee industry. I grew up in Vancouver but have called Calgary home now for close to 5 years. I competed and won first place in the 2016 Invermere Coffee Fest Aeropress Championship and made it through to the quarterfinals in the Canadian Championship that same year.

Recently on my trip to Vancouver for Spring Break I had my eyes set on visiting a coffee shop I had heard of before but hadn’t had the chance yet to visit. Honolulu Coffee has two cafes in Vancouver, and I was able to visit their Kerrisdale location.

Truth be told, up until this point I had never had a cup of 100% Kona Coffee. And so when I reached out to them to let them know I was coming to town they were so gracious in making sure I could experience my first cup of 100% Kona. What makes this Kona coffee different from many more you will see is that Honolulu Coffee owns two farms on the Big Island of Hawaii on the south side of Kona. This gives them 100% control from seed to cup. What the customer should notice is a very high level of quality in the beverage.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Ming who sadly wasn’t able to meet me upon my arrival due to a last minute need to be at their downtown cafe. But I was thrilled to arrive and to be greeted with such warmth from the staff. They were all so friendly and super helpful.

I was thrilled to watch them brew this as a V60 pour-over and when it arrived at my table it smelled wonderful. I let it cool just a bit, and when I had my first sip it truly did deliver on its promised tasting notes. It reminded me of nougat with a lingering honey sweetness. I was genuinely impressed with the decor (very island oriented) and the place was packed on a Tuesday mid-morning. Bright whites and greens with beach-inspired accents. A lovely bright feel on what was a bit over-cast morning in Vancouver.

They had a number of their coffees for retail. As long with some great mugs, pins, and other items. I learned that they have locations throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Guam, and even Japan. They roast all of their coffee in their main Honolulu Flagship location. They have quite the web-store with lots of their items available to purchase.

It was a great experience. Thank you so much to Ming, and the entire team at the Kerrisdale location. Thank you for letting me experience my first cup of 100% Kona Coffee. It won’t be my last.
